iPhone 12 has now been announced, in the follow-up event to September’s Time Flies putting, but we still haven’t seen iPad Air 4 hit the shelves. Here’s everything we know about an expected release date, price, features and more.
Over recent years, Apple has enhanced its trend of steadily bringing its Pro features down to a lower price point. Nowhere is the strategy more evident than with the new iPad Air 4, looking like an iPad Pro and adopting several of its features.
We’re going to dive deep into all the key information on the soon to be released iPad Air 4 but, for now, here’s a quick roundup of the key new stuff. There’s the iPad Pro-like design, Apple’s first power button-integrated TouchID sensor and a shift to USB-C. You’ll also get to choose from some vibrant colour options, the new A14 chip and get access to some exciting iPad Pro accessories.

iPad Air 4 price and release date
You’ll be able to grab the 64GB version for £579 while the cellular version starts at £709.
Pre-orders have now gone live for the new iPad Air, with devices going on general sale from October 23.
iPad Air 4 design
The iPad Air 4 looks a whole lot like the iPad Pro. it has a flat back and sides, rounded corners and a screen that covers the majority of the front. The bezel on the front isn’t quite as slims as on the Pro, though.
Apple is keeping the TouchID sensor around, however it is now embedded into the power key so it works sort of like it does on a MacBook. There’s no FaceID unlocking system here, which is another difference between this and the iPad Pro.
There’s a new USB-C port on the bottom (yay) and you can connect it to the Magic Keyboard for a more productive environment. That USB-C port is capable of 5Gbps data transfer and can drive 4K external monitors.
Another first this time around is a bunch of colours. You can get the iPad Air in five hues, including a slick new blue and green.

iPad Air 4 display
The iPad Air 4 will come with 10.9-inch screen size, slightly smaller than that of the 11-inch Pro. There won’t be a larger version with a 12.9-inch screen.
This display looks to be fantastic though, with a P3 colour gamut and a 2360 x 1640 resolution. It’s also fully laminated, so it’ll feel like you’re actually touching those pixels.
So, what’s missing from the Pro? well the big miss is a ProMotion panel. The iPad Pro can refresh at 120Hz, whereas the new iPad Air is still a 60Hz screen. This could lead to the iPad Air being a little slower when you’re interacting with it via the Apple Pencil 2.

iPad Air 4 specs and camera
Inside the iPad Air 4 is the new A14 Bionic chipset, which is what we assume will power the upcoming iPhone 12. Apple is touting this as offering 40% CPU and 30% graphics performance improvements over the previous iPad Air. How that compares to performance on iPad Pro remains to be seen.
The A14 Bionic also includes a new 16-core neural engine and improved machine learning capabilities.
In terms of camera. you’re looking at a 7MP FaceTime HD camera around the front with an f/2.2 aperture, 60fps 1080p video capture and Smart HDR. Flip the device around and you’ve got a 12MP sensor, which is the same as the one on the iPad Pro (just without the LiDAR). While we’re not huge fans of taking snaps with a tablet, there’s still plenty to like here and it should be a very capable setup.
There’s also WiFi 6 support, stereo speakers, 60% faster LTE connectivity and it’ll ship with iOS 14.
