1. Frozen 2 (coming July 3rd)

Say what you want about the Frozen series – it’s popular for a reason. As if one movie full of catchy/rage inducing songs wasn’t enough, last year Disney saw fit to grace us with a long-awaited sequel, one that is now also available to stream on Disney Plus.

While there’s a case to made that Frozen 2 isn’t quite as spectacular as its predecessor, the film still feels like time well spent with a group of friends you haven’t seen in years. Plus, if nothing else, Kristoff’s power ballad is still a sight to behold.

2. Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope

Fed up with the latest Star Wars films, and particularly The Rise of Skywalker? You’re not alone, so why not travel back in time and relive the Star Wars saga’s best moments? While A New Hope was definitely superseded by The Empire Strikes Back, there’s still a lot to love above the series’ first ever film.

Unburdened by the limitations of filmmaking back in the late 1970s, A New Hope really does take you to a galaxy far, far away with iconic set design and unbelievable world building. If you haven’t watched it, what better time than now to see where it all began?

3. Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey

Can Neil deGrasse Tyson do no wrong? This follow-up to the classic series of the same name sees Tyson stepping into the shoes of previous host Carl Sagan to take viewers on a journey through the wonders of space and all we’ve discovered in the cosmos.

While the full scope of Cosmos is best appreciated by adults, the show’s inventive visuals and use of animation make it engaging for children. Plus, with home learning now being the order of the day for most parents and their children during the pandemic, Cosmos is a great way of getting them involved in the sciences.

4. Ralph Breaks the Internet (Wreck-It Ralph 2)

Everyone made a big hubbub about Wreck-It Ralph when the film dropped in 2012, but very little of the same fanfare was afforded to its sequel: Ralph Breaks the Internet. Well I’m here to tell you that this is one Disney sequel that stands tall on its own.

Aside from all the great internet humour scattered throughout the film, Ralph Breaks the Internet actually tackles a surprisingly mature theme for a Disney film: accepting that friends will move on, but that distance should never affect the love you have for them. Believe me, I was just as shocked to emerge from a kids film, having been dished some of the best advice I’ve ever had as an adult.

5. Muppet Treasure Island

As a true 90s child, I’d be remiss if I neglected to include any of the superb Muppets movies that came out around the same time, but as it’s a long wait until Christmas, I’m going with Muppet Treasure Island. Starring none other than Tim Curry as Long John Silver, alongside the classic Muppets crew, Treasure Island is a surprisingly solid adaptation of its source material – just with a lot more singing and dancing.

Once the film starts, you’d have to physically restrain me to prevent a full-blown singalong to ‘Shiver my Timbers’. All these years later, the film’s soundtrack is still as catchy as anything, and it’s a great reminder of why the Muppets are still everyone’s favourite band of misfits.
